George Washington's Birthday Parade

| Wartime Melbourne

| On Liberty in Melbourne

The Marines’ only public parade was held in Melbourne  on George Washington’s Birthday,  22 February 1943:

'One of the high points of my military career was the parade. Led off by the magnificent 1st Marine Division Band, battalion after battalion marched in an easy-going gait down into the city proper to pass in review in front of City Hall… as we neared the reviewing stand the band with a great rolling of drums etc... thousands of cheering Australian voices  lined the entire parade route in downtown Melbourne…I don’t think I ever felt a prouder moment in my life as when this all happened…’.

Harry Horsman, Marine veteran
