Honours and Postgraduate Diploma

A fourth year of study in History, as either an Honours or Postgraduate Diploma student, is a richly rewarding experience. It provides scope to refine your analytical skills and research techniques while significantly enhancing your range of options after graduation. A fourth year of study at this level is valued by employers. It signals your ability to acquire advanced skills of analysis, to develop original ideas, and to apply innovative solutions to complex problems.

Once you are notified of the eligibility of your application, you will be sent a Thesis Proposal Form by the Faculty of Arts. This form needs to be completed in consultation with relevant academic expertise in the Discipline of History. The final decision to accept a student into the program is conditional upon the suitability of the thesis proposal.
Pure Honours
Students undertaking pure honours in History must complete:
- HIST40028 History Thesis (37.5 points)
- Five honours subjects (seminars) in History (totalling 62.5 points), including the core subject HIST40030 History for Historians.
Combined Honours
Students undertaking combined honours in History and another discipline must complete:
- HIST40028 History Thesis (37.5 points)
- Two honours subjects in History (totalling 25 points)
- Three honours subjects in the combining discipline (totalling 37.5 points)
OR
- An honours thesis in the combining discipline (37.5 points)
- Two honours subjects in the combining discipline (totalling 25 points)
- Three honours subjects in History (totalling 37.5 points)

Postgraduate Diploma
Please note that students undertaking a Postgraduate Diploma can only complete it in one Discipline area and cannot do a combined program.
