Facilities and Support for Graduate Research Students
The Melbourne School of Graduate Research
The Melbourne School of Graduate Research offers study carrels, a computer centre, bar and lounge facilities, professional development workshops, course advice and houses UMPA - the University of Melbourne Graduate Student Association.
Study Areas
The History Postgraduate Room is in the Kathleen Fitzpatrick room (room 343E). The room allows postgraduates to undertake study or quiet discussion. Additional study space and computers are available in the John Medley Postgraduate Room (room 530E). Please see The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies Office to obtain a key.
Jessie Webb Library
The History library is located on the 3rd floor of the John Medley building (room 342E). Postgraduate students can access this library through the Kathleen Fitzpatrick Room. Honours students can obtain a key from the Historical Studies Office. Bookings for meetings in the Jessie Webb Library should be made with the Executive Officer, Gabrielle Murphy (email g.murphy@unimelb.edu.au).
Computers/IT
The computer room is located opposite The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies Office. It contains three Windows-based computers, six Macintosh computers and a printer, which are free to use on a 'first come, first served' basis. The computers in the Jessie Webb Library and the Kathleen Fitzpatrick room (room 343E) have graphics software (such as Adobe Photoshop). The Jessie Webb Library also has a scanner.

Photocopying
A PIN-operated photocopier installed in the Computer Room entitles postgraduate students to limited 'free' photocopies.
Student e-mail
Postgraduate students can activate their free e-mail account and access their mail via a web browser. To login to your uni email account online visit: webmail.student.unimelb.edu.au/src/login.php
School news and information updates are circulated by e-mail. Contact the postgraduate team for details of how to subscribe to the The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies postgraduate mailing list.
Telephones
A telephone in the computer room is available for internal and local calls relating to study. Students with an urgent need to use another telephone, or to make an STD or ISD call, are advised to see their supervisor or one of the administrative staff in the Historical Studies Office.
Lockers
Students should contact the Historical Studies Office to obtain a locker key.
Common room
The Margaret Kiddle room (room 307W) is the The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies Common Room and open to both staff and graduate students.
After-hours building access
Full-time research-only graduate students may borrow a key to the John Medley Building from the The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies Office. The key is to be returned the next morning.
Mail boxes
Alphabetical boxes for messages and mail are provided for graduate students.
Representation
History Graduate students have formed the History Postgraduate Association (HPA). In addition to its representative activities, the HPA occasionally organises social events. The contact person for the HPA can be reached by leaving a message in the HPA pigeon-hole in the Computer room.
Seminar Series
Graduate students are encouraged to attend as many School seminars as possible, both as a way of discovering more about other areas of the discipline, and in order to get to know their colleagues better. There are two Seminar series: the Brownbag and also a Graduate Research Seminar Series. Details are also posted on the postgraduate noticeboard.

Tutoring Opportunities
The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies offers graduate students the opportunity to apply for sessional tutoring in History during their candidature. Other teaching opportunities include giving occassional lectures or taking up replacement lecturing positions when a staff member is on leave.
